Make Your CV Stand out

Presentation

It is essential that you take care in the presentation of your CV.

  • Restrict the length to 2 pages (a maximum of 3 pages).
  • Write in the third person avoiding the use of 'I' or 'We'.
  • The content also needs to be well organised, to be easy for the employer to read.
  • Use a confident and positive tone.
  • Focus on achievements, not your responsibilities. Be factual with the content.
  • Be succinct, use bullet points.
  • Make headings clear and consistent.
  • Keep it simple - do not use elaborate fonts or designs.
  • Read through methodically and check for spelling mistakes.

Structure

Personal Details

Include your name, address, phone numbers and email address.

Personal Profile

This is a snapshot of 'You' that must be succinct and presented in a positive way. It should include your skills and attributes in a couple of sentences to encourage the potential employer to want to read more!

Education

List schools, colleges, universities attended in a chronological order, the most recent first. Add start and finish dates and grades achieved.

Work Experience

List your job title, duties and responsibilities. List experience in a chronological order, the most recent first. Give more details on your most recent role. Present your work experience in short sentences or bullet points. Summarise your work experience, detailing the company name, employment dates. Highlight any achievements or successful projects you have been involved in or responsible for. Give a brief description of the team, structure, and clients (confidentiality where applicable) acted for. Detail the size and nature of your caseload and the variety of case experience.

Skills

Include specific skills such as languages, IT skills or typing speeds.

References (Optional)

There is no need to name referees initially it is acceptable to simply state that 'references will be supplied on request'. References are usually taken up at offer stage. You can provide the names and contact details of 2 work referees.
